Summary of PIP
All items will be classified as a letter (C5 or smaller), a large letter (bigger than C5, up to C4) or a packet (anything larger). Each format has it’s own pricing structure, with letters cheapest and packets the most expensive.

PIP - the good news
If you can squeeze it into a C5 envelope, you can send up to 100g for 21p per item, Standard 2nd Class (rather than the 22p or 36p that it presently costs). The 1st Class prices are structured similarly. In addition, items larger than A5 will only need a volume of 1000 contacts or more to now qualify for Mailsort.

PIP - the bad news
Items weighing less than 60g, that are larger than C5 (240mm x 165mm x 5mm) will now be charged at 35p (rather than 22p) per item for Standard 2nd Class. The 1st Class price also increases by a similar proportion. Bulkier items are even more expensive.

PIP – conclusions
The type of mailers affected by PIP the most are those that, although light, are larger than A5. We can keep increases to a minimum by always Mailsorting data when possible. For larger quantity mailings the differences in postage costs can be significant for C5 vs C4, so we recommend that you consider this in determining your preferred formats for your direct mail communications.
